III Premio Félix Candela 2019
Project: 2020

Inspired by the most impressive Agave Landscape in Mexico, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2006, Tequila, Jalisco was chosen as the place to develop Casa Agave. Located 6.8 km from the city of Tequila, in Santa Ana, a town belonging to the municipality of Tequila, the project rises from the earth like an agave rhizome.
Casa Agave draws on five different ideas for its conceptualization. First, the Agave Landscape, as mentioned before. Second, the agave as a living organism, understanding its processes and historical evolution, while also admiring its anatomical beauty and reinterpreting it in the architecture of the project. Third, the colonial architecture associated with the productive cultures of the agave, mainly the tequila industry, which shapes the design of Casa Agave. Finally, and no less importantly, Entre la Piedra y la Flor, poetry written by Octavio Paz in 1941, in which he narrates the splendor of the agave and its landscape, an idea that is interpreted in the project.
We tried to avoid interfering with the landscape as much as possible, which led to the conclusion of constructing an “anti-building”, a concept that consists of placing the project underground.
